Some ways for parents to help with the Science Fair project!

1. Read through all of the information on this website with your child.
2. Assist your child in finding a project that is interesting and challenging but is within their ability to carry out in the time available.
3. Discuss the plan for the project with your child and help them understand the procedures that need to be followed.
4. Assist your child in collecting supplies and materials needed.
5. Take your child to the library or help them find other resources, as needed.
6. Point out the importance of accurate observations and careful record keeping.
7. Supervise the use of tools, chemicals and other hazardous materials.
8. Discuss ways to display the project and encourage your child to make clear, neat lettering for the display.
9. Give lots of encouragement along the way and have fun with the project!
10. Ensure transportation is available to help your child bring his/her project home on April 14th as boards or large boxes of science materials will not be allowed on the bus.
11. Ensure your student stays with his/her display during the Science Fair.

Some “don’ts” for parents:
1. Don’t select the project for your child.
2. Don’t do the project for them.
3. Don’t let them wait until the last minute to do the project.
4. Don’t let them think that the project is a failure if it doesn’t turn out as expected. Finding out what doesn’t work, as well as what does work, is a part of learning.
5. Don’t take the project so seriously that it isn’t fun!

Don't Panic:

The science fair is a great chance for grown ups and kids to experiment, learn and have fun together. It is the journey that you take and the adventures that you have on the way that are important. And if you make mistakes, that's the best way to learn.
