The Scientific Method

Science is knowledge – knowledge gained by studying or practicing and then tested using the scientific method.
The Scientific Method is a logical sequence of steps to help scientists understand the world around them.

The steps of the Scientific Method are:
1. Ask a Question
2. Make a Hypothesis
3. Design an Experiment
4. Measure and Analyse the Results
5. Make a Conclusion

1. Ask a Question

Find something that you want to understand. Observe it and find out as much as you can about it from your own experiences and other peoples experiences. This will help you decide on the question that you want to ask or identify the problem that you want to solve.

2. Make a Hypothesis.

Determine a possible solution to the problem, a possible answer to your question. This is the hypothesis.

3. Design an Experiment

Design an experiment to test your hypothesis and to try and demonstrate that your hypothesis is true. Do the experiment. Record the procedure you use to do the experiment.

4. Measure and Analyse the Results

Make observations and take measurements of your results.  Analyse the results of your experiment and present your findings.

5. Make a Conclusion

What did you discover by doing the experiment? Can you answer the original question based on your results? Review the hypothesis. Does the original hypothesis seem correct? You can never PROVE the hypothesis because you cannot be sure that future experiments will show that your hypothesis was false.

Don't Panic:

The science fair is a great chance for grown ups and kids to experiment, learn and have fun together. It is the journey that you take and the adventures that you have on the way that are important. And if you make mistakes, that's the best way to learn.
