Science Docent FAQ
2025 Docent informational meeting: TBD
The Little Cedars Elementary School Science Docent Program is a volunteer-led science enrichment program held during the school day for one hour, once a month for 5 months starting in November and then again in January, February, March, and April. The program aims to have at least one docent volunteer in every classroom each year, with docents coordinating when more than one is assigned.
During visits, volunteer docents introduce students to a featured science experiment and lead a hands-on activity inspired by the Mystery Science curriculum. These activities give students the chance to explore scientific processes, practice the scientific method, and gain an appreciation for how science has shaped, and continues to shape, the world and human history.
Lessons are decided upon between the teacher and the docent.
Do I need science teaching experience?
No! Science teaching experience is needed. You'll lead a short discussion about the Mystery Science curriculum and then guide the students through the activity.
Do I have to teach by myself?
Sometimes! We try to have 2 or even 3 Science Docents in each class. Ask a fellow parent to co-teach! If no one is available reach out to the Science Docent Coordinator and they will try to find a helper. However, keep in mind sometimes it may just be you and the teacher!
Do I have to prep the materials?
No! For each lesson, all the materials are prepped and organized into a labeled bin. If any other supplies are needed, it will be listed in your lesson plans (i.e., glue sticks from the classroom). You will never need to bring anything from home.
Does the school provide training?
Yes! There will be an Science Docent Training Session, which is scheduled for October 2025 (date TBD) in the PTA room (across from the Library). You will receive your lesson plans, receive the login informaiton for Mystery Science, and learn where supplies are stored as well as learn how to effectively give a lesson and guide a discussion. We'll also answer any questions you have.
How do I know WHAT to teach?
We use the Mystery Science Curriculum (mysteryscience.com), which makes science easy and exciting for everyone! Each video lesson includes the instruction, story, and discussion prompts, all ready to go. Science Docents just get to spark the conversation and guide the activity. Best of all, the lessons are pre-planned and the labs are quick and simple to set up.
Can I only teach the class that my child is in?
We would love for you to help in the class your student is in. But, if you would like to help out in other classes as well, you are more than welcome!
What is the time commitment?
In total about 1 hour and 15 minutes. We recommend that you read through all your lessons at the beginning of the year, then again the night before your lesson. It's best to arrive 15 minutes before your lesson to gather your supplies. The lesson generally takes 45 minutes to an hour, then about 15 minutes for cleanup.
What if I need help?
Science Docents have a great support system. If at any time, you have a question or feel like you need help in the classroom - just send an email your Science Docent Coordinator (TBD) or Jessica VP of Academics at academics@littlecedarspta.org. We are more than happy to help in any aspect!
